As casting rumors go, the rumored actors for the Black Panther are high quality indeed. There have been suggestions of Idris Elba, Michael B. Jordan, Chiwetel Ejiofor, even Denzel Washington. Chadwick Boseman is a supremely gifted character actor who happens to be a great leading actor. So far, he has been picked to play Jackie Robinson and James Brown, so he has that going for him. Now, rumors are that he is in consideration for the role of Black Panther. I didn’t know how serious the consideration was until I saw this video. Marvel certainly has the ability to put together great and interesting casts.

The current Marvel cinematic universe has been remarkably diverse, however we have not seen non-white lead in any of these films. Black actors have the crutch of dealing with the stigma that a black lead to a film dooms international ticket sales. Therefore, we have seen less access to big roles for non-superhero, major tentpole films like a ‘Transformers’ or a ‘Hunger Games’. TV has figured out that black leads don’t doom your primetime schedule to some degree, but overseas sales does influence syndication, so TV isn’t completely without blame.

The video attached gives us some indication that if Boseman isn’t the top contender then there have been some discussions. To what end, we won’t know probably until the end of the Age of Ultron. As I noted in a previous post, there is some evidence that the Black Panther will soon be part of the MCU canon. P.S. watch the look on the publicists face when the question comes up (she’s is the brunette just to the right in the video.

Do you think that Boseman is a good choice for T’Challa?
