The X-Men universe has seen a Gambit on screen before, but that version was just a knock-of Tim Riggins with a hackneyed cajun accent. Now, a big star has inquired about playing the role of Remy LeBeau, which would suggest that Taylor Kitsch’s days as Gambit are numbered. Channing Tatum was speaking to MTV Movies’ Josh Horowitz during the MTV Movie Awards about wanting badly to play the cagey Cajun (something he has expressed previously in interviews). What is new about this topic is that Tatum revealed he has had discussions with Lauren Shuler-Donner about the part. No mention was made whether this would be a stand-alone project or as part of the new X-Men team being built into X-Men: Apocalypse. However, it is clear from this video that Tatum is eager to play the role.
What do you think of Channing Tatum playing Gambit?
Could Gambit become a “new” Wolverine, in other words, could he replace Wolverine has the centerpiece of the X-Men universe?
UPDATE from Empire: They spoke with Lauren Shuler-Donner in the X-Men: Days of Future Past preview.
From recent interviews and press conferences, it’s clear that Channing Tatum is a big X-Men fan. In particular, he loves Gambit, the charming Cajun card-thrower who starred in the comics, the ’90s animated TV series and, unfortunately, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, where he was mangled by a throwaway role for Taylor Kitsch. Now, in our new X-Men: Days Of Future Past issue, we learned from X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner that a Tatum-led Gambit movie may be closer than you’d think.
“I’m dying to do a Gambit movie with Channing Tatum,” Shuler Donner reveals. “That doesn’t have to be a great big movie. It’s a thief in New Orleans, it’s a whole different story. He’s on board, and I have to get the studio on board. How can anyone resist Channing? He’s such a sweetheart.”
