CBMB: Guardians of the Galaxy Shaping Up to be Biggest Movie of the Year!

After 10 days in theaters, Guardians of the Galaxy has stunned movie pundits with critical and financial success that has led to $175,922,000 at the domestic box office.

Although, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles beat out Guardians for #1 at the box office in its debut, Guardians still remains strong through its 2nd week after a $41,531,000 weekend. Guardians is now slightly ahead of Transformer 4 by $526,046 after that 10-day window in its domestic debut.

Guardians is now likely to possibly outpace all movie domestically, having bested Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘s 2nd weekend take by $300,000. Guardians dropped only 56% in the 2nd weekend which is the lowest percentage drop of similar superhero/genre/event films opened so far in 2014. We’re #1!

On the worldwide front, Guardians has yet to open in some foreign markets and lags well behind some of its competitors. Transformers 4 is crushing the competition abroad and has built 77% of its billion-dollar box office in those foreign markets (making $300,000,000 in China alone). Remarkably, Guardians doesn’t come out in China until October 10, 2014, which could afford the movie a huge 2nd life internationally.

Guardians is currently #9 on the all-time domestic box office rankings for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and will likely be in the top 5 by the end of its run.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is already set for July 28, 2017, and could see an incredible bump in business for an already breakout franchise.
